Meditate, Wrapped in Electric Blanket, Under Heating Lamp

My Finnish friend of 40 years sent this email this morning....
Subject: I have to complain to someone about this cold!
She writes:
"You might understand. It was not until today that by patience with the
cold wore to ultimate end. I hate it when it's cold at work, it's painfully cold outside even
if you're adequately dressed (THE FACE AND FINGERS AND POOR TOES), it's cold
at home, too.... I hate even to have to put three layers of wool on me, I FEEL STIFF AND UNCOMFORTABLE!
"I have been hoping for the cold to take an end but for vain, the weather forecast promises more freezing weather and -20F for another fortnight at least. I can easily stand four weeks of not being able to go out but the utmost necessary, especially if I am not feeling well... But two months is MORE THAN MY PATIENCE CAN TAKE! I definitively need more meditating, more of Buddhist practice to gain enough equanimity to stand these kind of winters.

"It was -20F today with hard wind, it's goin to be the same tomorrow with MORE WIND.
HELP!!!!! "
WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLL....

My first suggestion is to migrate south with the birds, as I do. Personally, I think the birds have it right. Cold climates are not fit for man nor beast nor bird. Why, even the Native American Indians, who we considered a primitive culture (how wrong we are, but that is another posting) knew they had to travel south when the temperatures dropped.

But, if that isn't possible, I recommend two investments that made life bearable in the North, before I flew the coop:
1-an electric blanket. I have found twin size for as cheap as $20usd. One only needs a twin to make a nice wrap/shawl to wear while awake...putting the temperature on FRY if necessary. And in bed, just put it on you, let the cold husband stay layered...

2-an infra-red light bulb. When I bought mine, at a pet shop, the salesperson wanted to know if I owned a lizard or a chicken that I was trying to keep warm. "No, it's for a mammal," I answered. These bulbs are sometimes called "Heat Lamps." Yum.

Sitting under the bulb (which I put in fixture that clamps anywhere) with my eyes closed, I honestly felt I was under the sun, on a beach. My mind went along with the fantasy and I was warm and at peace.
Beyond these purchasable solutions, I like the idea of deepening our spiritual practice whenever conditions seem unbearable. That's what being sick has been for me.

Wouldn't you know, as the Universe would provide, my dearest friend in India, Sujata Naidu, sent me this email today, also....with the very remedy for the Winter Chills!

Eight Verses for Training the Mind
by Geshe Langri Tangpa (1054-1123)

Composed by the Buddhist Master Langri Tangpa (1054-1123), Eight Verses for Training the Mind is a highly-revered text from the Mahayana Lojong (mind training) tradition. These instructions offer essential practices for cultivating the awakening mind of compassion, wisdom, and love. This eight-verse lojong enshrines the very heart of Dharma, revealing the true essence of the Mahayana path to liberation.
As we practice these lojong teachings in daily life, we train the mind to embrace reality in a completely wholesome, wise, and compassionate way. These excellent practices help us purify our negativity and awaken the heart by giving us a way to transform adversity and hardship into a direct opportunity for spiritual growth. In this way, rather than perceiving difficult people or adverse circumstances in our lives as an obstacle, tragedy, or punishment, we now meet these experiences with deep compassion, wisdom, and skill, using them as the actual path to enlightenment.
By way of these treasured practices we eliminate our competitive, selfish, and reactive nature, as well as our false and exaggerated concepts of self (also called self-grasping and self-cherishing). It is important to understand that the greed, jealousy, anger, pride, selfishness, and attachment, which cause us so much suffering, are actually misperceptions of reality, not inherent conditions of our mind. Therefore, these precious lojong practices can purify our misperceptions and delusions completely, revealing the natural radiance, clarity, wisdom, and compassion of our true nature.

With the heartfelt desire and determination to attain enlightenment
For the welfare of all living beings, who are more precious than a
Wish-fulfilling jewel for accomplishing the supreme goal,
May I always cherish them and hold them dear.

Verse I - Cherishing and caring for others is the source of all happiness. Cherishing ourselves over others is the source of all suffering and negative conditions in this world. Therefore, our determination to attain enlightenment should always be motivated by our heartfelt desire to serve the welfare of all living beings. The attainment of enlightenment is the supreme goal. Our enlightenment comes from the cultivation of bodhichitta (the awakening mind of love, compassion, and wisdom). Bodhichitta arises from our deepest compassion. To develop this compassion and reach the supreme goal, we need others. In this way, all living beings are the principle source for our spiritual development and for accomplishing the supreme goal of enlightenment. In addition, at some time each of us has been, and will be, a source of great kindness and benefit for one another. The immense kindness of all living beings is integral to our own human existence. Considering this, we can understand how living beings are even more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel and that we should always cherish them and hold them dear.
Whenever I am with others
May I think of myself as the lowest of all
And from the very depths of my heart
May I respectfully hold others as supreme.

Verse 2 - This verse calls us to train the mind in proper humility, eliminating our habitual arrogance and pride by 'thinking of ourselves as the lowest of all.' This is certainly not suggesting we belittle ourselves; we should have self-esteem and self-confidence. Rather, a practice is being offered for taming our exaggerated sense of self-importance and for cultivating true humility and respect for others. The afflictions of arrogance, superiority, pride, and competitiveness create disharmony among people and prevent us from learning and evolving. Therefore, by respectfully holding others as supreme, we become more humble, gentle, and open. This naturally brings harmony and compassion into our relationships and helps us to achieve great qualities, virtues, and spiritual realizations.

In all actions, may I closely examine my state of mind,
And the moment a disturbing emotion or negative attitude arises,
Since this may cause harm to myself and others,
May I firmly face and avert it.
Verse 3 - This verse calls for the sincere practice of mindfulness, closely examining our state of mind throughout all our actions. Through this practice of mindfulness, the teachings encourage us to firmly face and avert any disturbing emotions or negative attitudes the very moment they arise. The reason for this is that our delusions, disturbing emotions, and negative attitudes can provoke us to think, speak, or act in nonvirtuous ways which may cause harm to ourselves and others. This behavior brings karmic consequences and perpetuates our delusion and suffering. Therefore, throughout the day, while working, driving, walking, studying, talking with others, and so forth, we should closely examine our state of mind and heart. By training our mind in this skillful way, we will be able to firmly face and avert disturbing emotions and negative attitudes as they arise and before they develop any further momentum or power.

Whenever I meet people of unpleasant character
Or those overwhelmed by negativity, pain or suffering,
May I cherish and care for them as if I had found
A rare and precious treasure difficult to find.

Verse 4 - When we encounter unpleasant people, or those overwhelmed by negativity, pain, or suffering, we often prefer to ignore or avoid them rather than cherish and care for them. We may consider ourselves to be more important or more evolved than such beings, and we usually turn from them, as we do not want to be bothered, hurt, or contaminated by their condition. This verse suggests reversing our usual self-cherishing attitude by learning to cherish and care for such people, being joyful and grateful as if we had found a rare and precious treasure. To overcome the delusion and egoism of our self-cherishing, we view this encounter as an opportunity to serve and bring happiness to others, rather than a nuisance to be avoided. In this way, our self-cherishing mind diminishes and our compassion deepens so as to embrace all living beings without exception.

Whenever others, because of their jealousy, treat me badly
With abuse, insult, slander, or in other unjust ways,
May I accept this defeat myself
And offer the victory to others.

Verse 5 - Learning to accept loss and defeat for ourselves and offering gain and victory to others is the very foundation of the bodhisattva practice. Although it may appear, at the worldly level, that we suffer loss by way of this practice, ultimately the practitioner receives the greatest benefits of spiritual wealth and virtue. In learning to accept harsh or unjust treatment, we should not allow ourselves to react with anger, behave in the same nonvirtuous ways in return, or to abandon others because of their actions toward us. This is the essence of accepting defeat and offering the victory, and the accomplishment of supreme patience and kindness. By accepting defeat and offering the victory to others, with the pure motivation of heartfelt compassion, we destroy the ignorance of our self-cherishing at its very roots.

When someone whom I have benefited
Or in whom I have placed great trust and hope,
Harms me or treats me in hurtful ways without reason,
May I see that person as my precious teacher.

Verse 6 - When we are kind to people, helping them, giving them our trust and hope, we naturally expect to be treated kindly in return. When people repay our kindness and trust by harming us or treating us in hurtful ways, we often react with anger, hurt, or disappointment. After such an experience, we may find it difficult to give them our love and respect. This type of ordinary love is conditional and impure. As practitioners, we want to embrace a situation such as this with skillful wisdom, compassion, and unconditional love. Therefore, it is essential that we have a way to transform these difficult experiences into the actual path to enlightenment. To accomplish this, we learn to see a person who harms us or treats us in hurtful ways, as our precious teacher. This person becomes our precious teacher because of the priceless dharma lessons we receive. Through their kindness, we also receive the ripening and purification of our own negative karma, which is the inevitable result of our having done a similar thing to someone in the past. In this way, we can see how even our worst enemies can be our greatest benefactors and precious teachers.

In brief, may I offer both directly and indirectly all help,
happiness and benefit to all beings, my mothers,
And may I secretly take upon myself
All of their harmful actions, pain and suffering.

Verse 7 - This verse refers to the essence of Tong-len practice (Giving and Taking). We are to offer, directly and indirectly, our help, happiness, benefit, skills, and resources in loving service to all beings who certainly, at some time in the past, have been our own mothers. In Tong-len practice, with strong compassion, we visualize taking on the obstacles, problems, illnesses, and suffering of others. We then visualize giving them all of our happiness, comfort, love, virtue, prosperity, and great insights. In this verse the word 'secretly' suggests this particular practice of compassion may not be suitable or may be too difficult for beginning practitioners. It also means that this practice should be done discreetly, and not openly displayed or spoken about so as to gain praise or recognition.

May I keep all of these practices undefiled by stains of the eight worldly concerns (gain/loss, pleasure/pain, praise/blame, fame/dishonor),
And by recognizing the emptiness and illusory nature of all existing things,
May I be liberated from the bondage of attachment and mistaken views of reality.

Verse 8 - It is essential that our spiritual practice not be defiled or stained by the eight worldly concerns. For example, engaging in these practices hoping to be recognized or praised as an excellent dharma practitioner is not the right motivation. Nor should we practice with expectations of gaining something special or pleasurable for ourselves. Our motivation for practice must not become polluted or obscured by worldly concerns and attachment. The right motivation is to act exclusively and compassionately for the benefit of other beings. Our mind training practice must also be unified with our direct perception of ultimate truth—emptiness. As we gain realization of ultimate truth, we understand the empty, illusory, and impermanent nature of all existing things. With this realization, grasping or clinging to external appearances, or being deceived by them, diminishes, and we gain liberation from the bondage of attachment and mistaken views of reality.

Now Set Aside All Earthly Cares

Our television news and sometimes our daily lives can be heavy with trouble, grief, suffering, pain, anguish and anxiety.

Maybe being sick for a month is why I loved the following phrase I heard at St. Anne's Byzantine Catholic Church this morning: "Now set aside all earthly cares."

Setting aside our earthly cares doesn't mean we stop being responsible or concerned. We aren't directed to abandon or ignore our cares... just to set them aside for a moment.

Because all of us need moments of silence, of peace, of quietude. We need to set aside our worries so we can let the fresh breeze of life and love sweep in. We need to empty ourselves in order to receive what we need, to hear that small voice within. We need time and space to meditate.
Friday night, I read a Buddhist meditation, written by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, the meditation master who has founded more than 1000 Kadampa Meditation Centers around the world. Sitting at the Trinity Meditation Center here in New Port Richey, I found these words from Geshe's The New Meditation Handbook so beautiful:

May everyone be happy.
May everyone be free from misery.
May no one ever be separated from their happiness.
May everyone have equanimity, free from hatred and attachment.

In other words, may all set aside their earthly cares.

May Divisions Among Us Cease

Living in Florida this winter, I am 750 miles from Port-au-Prince, the horrific epicenter of this week's killing earthquake. From my comfortable chair in New Port Richey, Haiti is about 1200 miles.

Since I was growing up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, I've been aware of the differences between neighborhoods. Kids who lived down off of Burdick Street had year 'round runny noses and played in the street.

During my first trip to India in 1970, this contrast was further seared into my memory.
But, oddly, England is where I experienced the most dramatic telling of this age old story of disparities; on a day trip in 1986 to medieval Warwick Castle. Built by William the Conquerer in 1068, overlooking the River Avon, Warwick was owned by the Greville family (the Earls of Warwick) until 1978, when it became a protected, historic site.

Educated in American schools, I knew nothing about castles. Walking the gorgeous 60 acre grounds, and touring the ancient phenomenal stone interiors, I was astounded by how the Greville's had lived. But nothing shocked me more than the Castle's six storey Caesar's Tower.

One hundred thirty three feet high, the Tower's second, third and fourth floors are beautifully furnished family quarters. The fifth floor was used as storage for ammunition, and the top storey a guardroom. So, how did the Greville's use the first floor?

AS A DUNGEON.
I wish I could convey what it felt like to see and learn this fact during my summer Castle tour. How could the family be sitting down to dinner, knowing that directly under their feet, a French soldier or other enemy was being tortured to death, hanging in a metal contraption?

Today, knowing Haitian families are burying loved ones by the tens of thousands just 1200 miles away is painful. Would I be able to handle knowing someone was bleeding to death less than seven feet away?
So reads the June 19, 2009, headline in The Telegraph, one of England's biggest newspapers.
Far from the quiet chamber I toured in 1986, the Warwick Castle dungeon was upgraded last year, and now hosts a very convincing drama, with life-like blood, suffering, screaming and more. Close to 20 visitors had fainted and/or thrown up after witnessing the dungeon show, especially during the demonstration of how prisoners had their tongues ripped out. Government officials warned that the entertainment would have to be toned down if more tourists got sick.
Watching television and the subdued, blanched expressions of American journalists reporting the Haitian nightmare, I can easily imagine they might feel faint and sick. Proximity not only breeds intimacy...it can make it impossible to ignore suffering.
A friend sent me a lovely youtube link this morning, THE GENTLE ART OF BLESSING. The five minute video closes with this wish, "May the lonely be comforted, may love abound, may divisions among us cease."

May all divisions, be they 1200 miles or seven feet, cease. May we find ways to share our blessings and our suffering. Amen.

Beyond Feelings, Beyond Pain


We're in Florida, where it is to go to 25 Farenheit tonight; our ruby red grapefruit tree might well lose its bounty. We've been waiting for Mid-January, when the tree's meaty, juicy orbs are supposed to be at their peak.

To make this historic winter even more unforgettable, we've been struggling with a respiratory flu that has kept us coughing and aching for more than two weeks. Being cold in the cold....makes me want to go beyond this physical discomfort, to some other level of consciousness.

Sleep is a wonderful friend. I had a 4 hour nap today, which included a lovely dream about driving through Tamil Nadu in India with my husband! Somehow, our Subaru was the vehicle, and we were thinking about going to Chennai, and surprising Suren and Boona. The joy I woke with was thrilling...I felt so pleased and excited.
Who's to say seeking comfort and well being through dreams is a bad idea? Who's to say sticking with the pain of full consciousness is for my Higher Good?
One of my favorite popular county songs by Lady Antebellum, has this line, "Seems I would rather hurt than feel nothing at all." How many of us are stuck in that place of identifying our pain, our victimhood, asking, "Why me?"

I just read of the shocking suicide of one of Vermont's most gifted artists, Stephen Huneck. In August, I took family to his wonderful dog chapel, on Dog Mountain, near St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

But this week, Stephen hit a level of pain that was absolutely intolerable. I am so sorry for him, and for all of us he left behind. What a beautiful man. He said, "I believe art should be an integral part of life. I try to give my work an almost magical energy that makes the viewer feel good."

Mastering the Art of Living has got to go beyond feeling good and bad. It has to take us to a place of no expectation, no emotion. Every experience of perceived disappointment, bad weather, sickness or worse invites us to explore deeply a painless place. This is the journey I am on.

12 Attributes, as Designed by The Mother


Part of my spiritual path includes reading some of the work of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, two powerful writers and leaders in the field of Enlightenment. I have visited their Ashram in Pondicherry, India, twice, and hope to be there again next November.

The Mother was a French woman, who first saw the sage Aurobindo in a dream. She later came to Pondi and made it her home.

While much of her writing has fascinated me, lately, I've been reflecting on what she called the 12 Attributes. She created a logo or design to further promote these 12 powers. The twelve psychological attributes are Aspiration, Perseverance, Gratitude, Humility, Sincerity, Peace, Equality, Generosity, Goodness, Courage, Progress, Receptivity. I just bought myself the medallion, above, as the 12 stones around the edges are such a beautiful reminder of the attributes. The amethyst in the center represents me...it is my birthstone, after all!

As a lover of language, I have meditated a while on these words...how she chose them and manifested them. I can understand the idea of practicing receptivity and sincerity....but then, what about the word PROGRESS? How does that fit in?
Tonight, I realized I have been regarding PROGRESS as a noun...when I believe she used it as a verb, as in, "to move toward a higher and better state." I was thinking of PROGRESS meaning the result of some action, as in, "we achieved progress."
In all aspects of life, we are flowing onward, moving and progressing. Somedays, like now, when I am seeing little progress getting over a wicked flu bug, I wonder if I have been progressing. But, then I see the questions I have been asking myself, and the flights of fancy my bedbound mind has taken, and I can see, I am moving. As long as we are alive, we are evolving, we are progressing.
